The A46 Expressway Plan Dropped
Philip Bland, Chairman of SELAG wishes to pass on the good news.
Dear SELAG Supporters,
By now many of you will have seen the article in the Leicester Mercury which sums up the reason the Plan has been dropped.
The main reason is that Midlands Connect felt the proposed route was too long and most traffic would continue to use the existing route rather than the proposed long loop round Leicester as envisaged in the SGP. As such Midland Connect has withdrawn support. Instead they intend to plan to improve the existing MI and A46 Western Bypass.
So David has won and Goliath has lost. We at SELAG can be proud of our contribution to this fight. Along with the CPRE and the Willoughby Waterleys Action Group we did make a difference. In fact SELAG had made it very clear to Midlands Connect some 9 months ago that we viewed the proposed route as not viable since it was too long. The very conclusion Midlands Connect has come to.
Thank you all for your help whether through donations, lobbying, demonstrating or simply by being a supporter. You all were not prepared to allow this massive road project to cut a swathe through our precious countryside.
There is of course still a problem. The SGP will have to be rewritten and the issue of where all the extra housing is going to be sited remains an important point to be resolved. There is a danger that some large landowners may be prepared to fund part of a road similar to the Expressway which could result in a dog’s dinner like the City outer ring road. So problems may still exist for some communities. We shall have to wait and see. But in the meantime let us celebrate a famous victory.
